Westwood Elementary was the first LEED® certified building in the State of Minnesota, and combines high performance environmental features with a small school environment built around a team teaching approach. Daylight is used as the primary source of illumination during the day, both improving the learning environment and reducing electricity use. The school is laid out in classroom pods focused on group display/resource areas that encourage interaction and teamwork. These pods are tied together in the center of the building by the double-height cafeteria, which serves as the social center of the school.
